The HANDEVAT MUSIC Project is a non-profit organization (NPO) based in Kleinmond, South Africa. With a mission to transform lives through the power of music, this remarkable project has been making a positive impact on its community since its establishment in 2013. At the heart of the Handevat Music Project is the belief that music can inspire, uplift, and empower individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Through their diverse range of programmes, including lessons, workshops, performances and community events, they inspire and nurture their students’ passion for music, provide platforms for celebrating diversity and fostering a sense of belonging, and offer accessible and high-quality music education to people from all walks of life.
Marimba playing is an important part of the project: it supports and enhances traditional music teaching by introducing and familiarising all the basic practical and theoretical music concepts; it is a tool to practice the art of music making and performing in a fun way; and it is used as an instrument of fundraising for the project.
Handevat Marimbas is the award-winning band that has been captivating audiences with their innovative arrangements of repertoire that spans several different genres, including famous classical composers’ works to your favourite film soundtracks to indigenous songs and beyond.
The Handevat Music Project goes beyond teaching musical skills; they strive to foster personal growth and development in each participant. The project fosters important life skills, such as discipline, commitment, perseverance, and teamwork, which are essential for personal growth and success in any endeavour. Through their dedication, passion, and commitment to inclusivity, the Handevat Music Project continues to enrich lives and spread the universal language of music in Kleinmond and beyond.
